By now, you should have assigned and graded several informal assessments.

Describe the objective and at least one feature of an informal assessment that you have designed.

How have you been using the results of the assessments you've used to improve how you teach and what students learn? What strategies has your CT suggested for providing students with guidance before they do the assignment to improve their performance? What about after the assignment?

Throughout these past couple of weeks, I have assigned and graded several informal assessments. For one class I had the following objectives written on the board:
  • Why are chloroplasts important in photosynthesis?
  • What is the difference between light-dependent and light independent reactions?
  • How do light dependent reactions allow for light independent reactions to happen?

The informal assessment that I designed to assess the understanding, is that the students had to create a organizer/foldable on photosynthesis, where they have to explain the light dependent reactions and light independent reactions, and the steps that take place during these processes. I collected these organizers/foldables and returned them back to students the next day. My goal was not to give the students a formal grade on it, but to informally assess their current understanding on the processes.

I have been using the results of the assessments to improve how I teach and what the students learn. If there are some discrepancies between concepts, I will go back and explain them, re-teach them, or teach it in a different way. My CT has suggested that I do a quick review of topics and concepts before an assessment to get the students thinking about what they know. Also my CT has suggested an opening brainstorming activity or question that will jog their memory before an assessment. After the assignment, my CT has suggested that I review the answers on every assignment, and go over what the students do not understand. Also my CT has suggested that I remind students of the real life connection this topic has, and where we are going in the future, and how all these concepts relate together.
